Driving Blind

General Fiction and Poetry 10/13/2001 Rating:4 Scrolls

It is too bad that Bradbury is seen mainly as a science fiction writer. Because of that, there are a lot of readers who will miss these thought provoking short stories. Most of them are day to day life stories, with only a few that definitely belong in the speculative realm.

There are stories like "The Mirror", where a set of twin girls grow up exactly alike. The younger knows she is the mirror of the older. She makes jokes about it. Then, around age 40, she rebels.

Or there is "Remember Me." When someone is away from home, minor things can take on importance. In Europe, a traveler meets his butcher. Because they are so far from their normal surroundings they are suddenly close friends. Yet, besides being in Europe, what do they have in common?

This collection contains many slice of life short stories. Don't ignore these just because Bradbury is normally classified as a science fiction writer. The person who prefers current day fiction will like these. So will the speculative fiction reader. They are easy reading that will leave the reader thinking.
