Until Angels Close My Eyes

General Fiction and Poetry 3/25/2000 Rating: 3 Scrolls

Leah is seventeen and in recovery from bone cancer. She had spent the summer in an Amish section of Indiana. There she had met Ethan, an Amish young man having a "fling", learning about the English ways. She and Ethan had fallen in love. She has returned home to her city and they correspond by letter.

Now Leah learns her beloved stepfather has liver cancer. It had been a surprise to her that he had been ill. She is upset with her mother for not telling her many things Leah feels she had a right to know.

My daughter gave me this teen inspirational novel; "You gotta read this, Mom." Ethan's faith in his Amish heritage is strong. Leah knows she has a guardian angel who helped her through her cancer the year before. This is a coming of age story as Leah once again faces cancer, this time in her stepfather, faces her love for Ethan, faces her own future. Ethan faces his love for Leah, his Amish heritage, his desire for knowledge of more outside his Amish world, and his desire to see his shunned brother.

My 13-year-old daughter thought this was a wonderful. I found it easy to read. It tugs at the heart strings as Leah grows into maturity. This is one I could recommend to any teen girl. This is the third book of a series, the first two being Angels Watching Over Me and Lifted Up by Angels.
