The Cat Who Robbed a BankLilian Jackson Braun; G.P. Putnam’s Sons 1999WorldCatWelcome to Moose County, 400 miles north of anywhere. James Qwilleran and his Siamese cats, KoKo and YumYum, are the resident wealthy patrons of the county. Qwill is a newspaperman who is semi-retired. He also finds himself involved in murder cases that happen in and around Moose County.

In this novel a jeweler from Chicago makes his annual trip to Pickax to buy and sell estate jewelry. He is found dead in his hotel room only partially through his business trip. Why would anyone in Pickax kill the flamboyant salesman? What happened the the “niece” who had been traveling with him? She disappears at the same time, although all her clothes and belongings are still in the hotel room.

Meanwhile life goes on in Moose County. The young hotel manager is excited about his new home and job. The Scottish games weekend continues as scheduled. The library’s new bookmobile has the murals painted on its side and is now ready for use. Qwill finds a chance to masquerade as a security guard to penetrate a “women only” function. KoKo is interested in items around the house that may be connected to the murder. What is he trying to tell Qwill?

The mystery is almost the side story. Except for the cats’ actions, Qwill is not too involved in this solution. The story highlights day to day life in Moose County. It also sets up a future novel. It’s enjoyable, a comfortable mystery.
