Talking to Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede
Talking to DragonsWhen Daystar is 16-years-old, a wizard visits he and his mother at their small home beside the Enchanted Forest. She melts the wizard, but knows he will return. She retrieves a sword from the Forest and gives it Daystar. She then tells him it is time for him to leave.
When Daystar questions what he should do, Mother tells him he will discover this as he goes along. Daystar knew he would follow Mother’s dictates, but he had no idea what to do. He walked into the Enchanted Forest. That is when his adventures began.
Very quickly he rescues Shiara, a fire-witch. She travels with him. She explains that the Society of Wizards is looking for her. He knows there is one looking for him. They travel further into the forest to learn how to avoid wizards and for Daystar to complete his task.
This is an amusing, light novel. Shiara, as a fire-witch, is very rude. Daystar’s mother has instilled politeness into him, especially if he should ever meet and talk to a dragon. When I looked it up at Amazon, it was listed as a young adult novel and part of an ongoing series.
