Lady Slings the Booze by Spider Robinson

Science Fiction

Lady Slings the Booze Lady Slings the BoozeSpider Robinson; Baen 2002WorldCatJoe Quigley is an investigator hired to perform an unusual job. He has been hired to stay at New York City’s most prestigious bordello, Lady Sally’s. The owner of the house will explain the job he would be required to do once there. So off Joe went with his preconceived notions of what he would find in the house.

He privately meets with Lady Sally. She wants him to find the man who wasn’t there who was assaulting house employees and guests in a manner they could not determine. One moment things were fine, the next the victim would be in the same place but with impossible alterations (clothes changed or missing, paint or writing added to their body, that type of thing). Once Joe grasps the idea of the job, he is taken on a tour of Lady Sally’s.

All of his preconceived notions about bordello life were burst at Lady Sally’s. She did not run her business in the manner of most houses. Here, the employees are artists and are paid a salary. The clients pay a pre-determined annual fee and may avail themselves of the pleasures as often or as little as they liked. Anyone who broke the rules (which all include respecting the other people around) or did not meet Lady Sally’s standards was invited to meet the world and not return. And Joe meets Arethusa, one of the ladies of the House. His life will never be the same.

Lady Slings the Booze is yet another fun book from Spider Robinson’s Callahan’s Crosstime Saloon series. Like Callahan’s Lady be aware it does take place in a bordello. There are somewhat explicit sexual situations throughout Lady Slings the Booze. It is also a mystery as Joe tries to find a man who isn’t there and locate some terrorists threatening to blow up the world. I enjoyed the first half, but bogged down in the second half, despite the presence of Nikola Tesla.

Notice: Suggestive dialogue or situations
