Disenchanted & Co. by Lynn Viehl

Romantic SuspenseRomantic SuspenseDisenchanted & Co. by Lynn ViehlParanormal RomanceIt is difficult being a single woman in Torian society. Kit Kittredge has her own business disproving magic when people come to her for help. She is certain there’s no such thing as magic, but there are spirits. Her grandfather Harry Houdini sticks close to her. In Victoriana and across the United Kingdom, it is a man’s society and most women marry. It’s easy for a man to discredit a woman – leaving her abandoned and on the streets. Kit manages to remain her own person despite the mores of society.

When Lady Walsh comes to Kit for help, Kit is reluctant. She has been avoiding the wealthy families on the Hill. In spite of her hesitancy, Kit agrees to come to the Walsh home. Lady Walsh believes her husband’s first wife is cursing her from the grave. Kit doesn’t believe in magic so is certain there is a mortal behind the events happening to the beautiful second wife. Hopefully she can visit the Hill without running into the deathmage Lucien Dredmore.

Kit learns there is more to what is happening in the Walsh home than she expected. Fortunately, before she could be injured Lucien was there to rescue her. But his rescue was short lived. By the time Kit realizes how important Lucien is to her, she realizes he may die. And she’s the one who may have to deliver the death blow.

In Lynn Viehl’s alternate history, the English won the American Revolutionary War. Two hundred years later in Disenchanted & Co., it is a steampunk style world with magic and science mixed together. Viehl’s unique voice brings her world to life with strong characters and convincing fantasy.

The beginning, though, is rushed in the development of the world and the relationship between Kit and Lucien. The editor’s strike out pen must have been extremely heavy there. The reader knows that Lucien will be the romantic protagonist for Kit despite her detestment. But her abrupt change of heart happens too quickly in my opinion.

The rest of Disenchanted & Co. makes up for that. It is a crafty book, along the lines of Gail Carriger’s Soulless, yet with Viehl’s own world bent that catches the imagination. Whether you’ve read numerous steampunk romantic suspense novels or are just starting out, you won’t go wrong with Disenchanted & Co.

Notice: Strong sexual content, Non-graphic violence
